Both boys hung from the bars, panting -- their arms quivering as they each tried to draw their chin up over the bar one more time. Markus, a student from an opposing academy who held his school's record, was a formidable opponent for Billy Marson of Millsberry Academy. "Come on, Billy! You can do it," Coach Danner urged. The rest of Billy's classmates shouted for him as well, cheering him on and encouraging him to beat his opponent. "Billy! Billy! Billy!" they chanted, as he felt his sweaty hands slipping from the pole above his head. Not willing to let his schoolmates down, Billy readjusted his grip on the bar, took a deep breath, and slowly began inching himself up for one last chin-up. His opponent, seeing that his record was being threatened, also started to painstakingly pull himself up. Both boys were neck and neck, with their respective schoolmates cheering like mad. "That's it, Billy! I know you can do it, but more importantly, you know you can do it!" Coach Danner yelled. With this, Billy's classmates shouted for Billy at the tops of their lungs, drowning out the cheers from the opposing school. This encouragement is what he needed. Billy willed himself to pull his chin up and over the bar. His schoolmates let out a wild cry, while his opponent Markus, unable to equal the feat, slipped off the bar and fell onto the mat below. To this day, no one has ever been able to beat Billy Marson's all-time chin-up record, although many try each year. Nearly all of Coach Danner's students hope to meet the challenge one day... and earn a legendary accomplishment of their own. Click here to go back to the hallway.
